What is a Selenium Blood Test?
Selenium is an antioxidant consumed naturally as a trace mineral found in food. Antioxidants are important for the control of free radicals in the human body. Selenium blood tests are often included as part of a complete blood count (CBC) test. Low levels of selenium could mean impaired thyroid function or reduced immune system function. While selenium blood testing does not require fasting, other parts of the CBC may so patients must follow the basic instructions as provided by the ordering physician.
