DHEA-S (Serum) During Pregnancy

Laboratory Tests

Obie Editorial Team

What is DHEA-S?
DHEA-S (dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate) is excreted by the adrenal glands. Blood tests are ordered if female patients show signs of excessive masculinity or if an adrenal tumor is suspected. One of the causes of altered DHEA-S levels is polycystic ovary syndrome.

DHEA-S testing can also be ordered in men and children. Abnormal DHEA-S values in children could be associated with congenital adrenal hyperplasia or precocious puberty (very early puberty).
