What is Creatinine?

Creatinine is responsible for breaking down creatine, which is used by the muscle for growth and recovery. The creatinine blood test does not measure muscle health, however. The test is used to assess kidney health. The kidneys process creatinine and flush it out of the body. If creatinine levels are higher than normal, kidney function could be impaired. Men and women have different normal values for blood creatinine tests.
