What is Bicarbonate? Bicarbonate works to buffer pH levels in the body. The buffer helps control pH so blood does not become acidic or basic. Carbon dioxide and bicarbonate are closely related as about 90% of carbon dioxide carried in blood exists as bicarbonate. Testing for bicarbonate is rarely a solo order. Doctors typically include the bicarbonate blood test with other tests. Patients with lung disease, kidney disease and some metabolic diseases will measure altered bicarbonate values.
