What is Apolipoprotein A-1?
APOB, or Apolipoprotein B is associated with LDL or bad cholesterol. Apolipoprotein A-1, or APOA1, is just the opposite. APOA1 levels reflect the amount of HDL, high density lipoprotein, in the blood. This is the good cholesterol that helps clear bad cholesterol out of arteries. Cholesterol tests produce three numbers – total cholesterol, LDL and HDL. Total cholesterol measurements are only one indication of overall health. If the ratio between good and bad cholesterol is not healthy, it could indicate increased risk of heart disease even if overall cholesterol is low or normal.
