What is 1, 25 Dihydroxy Vitamin D?
The blood test for active vitamin D is known as the 1, 25 dihydroxy vitamin D test. 25 hydroxy vitamin D tests show the amount of inactive vitamin D. After that basic form is activated, it changes to 1, 25 dihydroxy. Another name for 1, 25 dihydroxy vitamin D is calcitriol. Calcitriol aids the gastrointestinal tract absorption of active vitamin D thus increasing levels of calcium in the blood. The test may be combined with blood calcium testing, especially if osteopenia or osteoporosis is suspected.

Calcitriol is prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis and rickets. A topical form may be used to treat psoriasis.
