Q: Is it safe to get the Hepatitis A vaccine during pregnancy?

A: Hepatitis A vaccine is a Pregnancy Category C medication. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with it and it's also not known whether it can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or if it can affect reproductive capacity. It should be given to pregnant women only if it's clearly needed.

The immediate effects of most vaccines usually do not last beyond several weeks. For example, women who receive the MMR vaccine are not supposed to get pregnant for 28 days, and it is assumed the same applies to the Hepatitis A vaccine.
