Preparing for a baby’s arrival in the home is one of the most exciting parts of pregnancy. Most families choose to wait until late in the second trimester to prepare the baby’s room just to ensure the pregnancy is safe. By this time, mom will not be able to help paint or lift furniture, so all pressure is placed on dad to make this happen.
When choosing paint for a baby’s room, make sure to research the best options in low odor paints. There are paints created with very low odors for use in children’s and infant’s bedrooms. This paint is perfectly safe for mom as long as the room is well-ventilated during the painting process and for at least a week afterward.
Furniture is another Dad task. Building the crib, stroller, changing table and other room accessories is where Dad can shine. Mom may feel as though she wants to be a part of the process, so Dad needs to take assembly slow and allow mom to help whenever she can.
Other household tasks that Dad can complete in preparation for the baby’s arrival include securing television sets to the wall with safety straps, placing mounts on appliances to prevent tipping, and placing socket protectors in all electrical sockets. These may seem like small things, but they are ensuring the safety of the baby who will be crawling and walking before you know it.
Mom and Dad can also prepare for life together after birth, during this time. Making a feeding and bathing schedule can keep chores and tasks evenly distributed between both parents. If dad will be returning to work shortly after the baby’s birth, it is important to allow sufficient sleep time at night without mom sacrificing her own health and well-being.
