What is a babymoon?

A babymoon is a vacation taken by a couple during pregnancy, close to before or after the birth of their baby. While a honeymoon is done shortly after the wedding, the babymoon is done specifically around the delivery of the baby. Initially, the babymoon was conceived (so to speak) as a vacation after delivery so that parents spend bonding with a recently born baby. However, more recently, a babymoon was also described as a vacation before delivery of the baby, during pregnancy, in order to allow the couple to enjoy a final trip together before the baby is born.

Why do you need a babymoon?

The time right before the baby comes is a very special period in the life of a couple. Once your baby is born, your life will never be the same. Living with a newborn is an abrupt change, riddled with stress and sleep deprivation, so strengthing your bond between you and your partner is always a good idea.

A vacation is also a great time to simply rest and relax, and also plan and dream about what you both think parenthood will be like. Some time away from the hustle and bustle of life is an ideal time to share any apprehensions or fears concerning labor, delivery, or anything at all. Bonding is so much easier on a vacation without the daily stressors.

When should you take a babymoon?

The best time to take a babymoon is at the end of the second trimester. This way you are still free to fly and enjoy a destination that is further away. During this time, you are usually done with the nausea and vomiting of early pregnancy but not yet feeling weighed down and fatigued as you may begin to feel toward the very end of your pregnancy.
