The best time to start your periconception prep is 2-3 months before pregnancy, before you start trying to conceive
- Take a Periconception interview first, then see your doctor for a periconception visit
- Start taking a prenatal vitamin supplement with folic acid AND Omega-3 at least 1-2 months before pregnancy
- Stop using birth control and stop smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking street drugs
- Read our "Food NoNos": Eat fish regularly but stay away from certain fish like shark, tilefish, king mackerel, and swordfish, and no more than 12 oz tuna a week.
- Consult a genetic counselor if indicated
- Be at your optimal weight, your BMI should be between 20 and 25
- Have any medical condition treated and see a dentist to get checked for peridontal disease
- Make sure you get vaccinations before pregnancy
- Avoid certain foods like undercooked meat, and deli food (they can transmit toxoplasmosis or listeria)
- Get some tests such as certain blood and other tests if indicated
