2. Learn everything there is to know about getting pregnant - Make love regularly and at the right time

Learn more about improving your chances getting pregnant.
Begin a healthy lifestyle at least  three months before beginning to attempt conception. Making sure both your (and his) body and mind are in best shapewill improve fertility, decrease the risks of miscarriage and birth defects, and decrease pregnancy complications. There is a lot of misinformation and many myths about trying to conceive.
Many of you have questions about making love when TTC. Timing is a critical factor in trying to achieve a successful pregnancy. Learn all about when you ovulate and what your ovulation symptoms are, so you can optimize timing of making love. How often should you make love? Do you have to have an orgasm? Does it make a difference if you don't have an orgasm? Does it hurt the pregnancy?
Having regular sex is the best way to get pregnant. Couples often try to time everything perfectly for ovulation but do not have sex when they think they are not ovulating. It is true that sex that is not within the time of ovulation will not result in pregnancy. However, because women do not always ovulate when they think they will, having sex three times a week will help to a woman cover her bases, so to speak, and not miss an opportunity to get pregnant.
On average, a woman has a 20% chance of conceiving each month with the egg remaining viable (fertilizable) for a 12-24-hour period. To optimize the baby making time of the month, it is important that you understand what changes occur in your cycle, so that you may use these factors as sign posts to knowing what her optimal time to conceive is.

3. Eat well, take your vitamin and folic acid supplement well before conception. Improve his health too!

His sperms have to be healthy, so make sure you know how to improve his sperm count.
Eating your 5 daily servings of fruits and vegetables helps not only to maintain your weight, but it will also ensure that you are getting your balance of vitamins to improve conception rates. Taking supplements which include folic acid and prenatal vitamin supplements, and those that include vitex to improve fertility such as FertilAid are all keys to preventing birth defects in the developing embryo.Learn all about the "Food NoNos".
Though a number of factors can be responsible, many doctors now believe that diet is key. In a study of some 17,000 women conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, researchers were able to define a group of "fertility foods" able to improve odds of getting pregnant.

Which dietary tenets were key to increasing fertility?

  1. Eating more monounsaturated fats (like olive oil) and less trans fats (like the kind found in many baked goods or fast foods).
  2. Increasing intake of vegetable protein (like soy), while reducing animal protein (like red meat).
  3. Eating more high fiber, low-glycemic foods -- like whole grains, vegetables, and some fruits, while reducing the intake of refined carbohydrates and sugars.
  4. Consuming moderate amounts of high-fat dairy products -- like ice cream, whole milk, and cheese.
4. Review with your doctor all medications you take including over-the-counter and prescription medications

Most medications are safe, but there are some which can affect your pregnancy. Do not stop any medications that you need unless you discuss it with your doctor first.

5. Stop Smoking and drinking - Easy on the coffee

Smoking has negative impacts both on the woman and her partner. Studies have shown that smoking ten or more cigarettes per day has a negative effect on egg production. And in men, cigarette smoke constricts blood vessels, which in turn, negatively affects sperm by altering oxygen consumption and nutrient intake.
Alcohol affects your hormones. It lowers estrogen levels, which can interfere with ovulation. In addition it can increase the risk of having a miscarriage and fetal malformations. Men who drink have lower sperm counts and decreased fertility.
High doses of caffeine, such as three cups of coffee or more can negatively affect a woman's chance of conceiving.

6. Be at your optimal weight and exercise

Are you at your optimal weight? Both extremes, under- or overweight can impair your health and fertility and may have an adverse effect on your pregnancy. Having a healthy body weight helps maximize fertility success rates. Weight fluctuations either 20% above or below a woman's target range can disrupt estrogen levels which regulate ovulation.

7. Relax, relax, relax

Stress may impact your body by interfering with normal ovulation and may reduce sperm production in men.  Lower stress levels may mean better female and male natural fertility. If you are under a lot of stress, try alternative methods such as:

  • stress management programs,
  • yoga,
  • acupuncture
  • other relaxation techniques.
8. See your dentist for a checkup and cleaning

Gum disease that's not treated has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcome such as preterm deliveries. Getting regular checkups ensures that your teeths won't have an adverse effect on your pregnancy.

9. Check your health insurance coverage, review your options for leave at work and make a pregnancy and baby budget

10. When to see a specialist

See an infertility specialist (Reproductive Endocrinologist, RE) if:

  • You are under 35 and you did not get pregnant within one year
  • You are 35 and over and you did not get pregnant after 6 months
  • You have any medical issues

Take the test to see if you should see an RE now.

My period is one day late. I feel nauseuous and my temperature is quite elevated for me. I took two hpt and both were negative. Is there a chance that I still may be pregnant and is it a bad sign to have a low hcg level?
Ty 9/22/2006 16:32
sethandkristine, It's possible that you are pregnant. If your temp remains elevated for 17 days in a row after ovulation. that is an early indicator of pregnancy. some Hcg tests don't always give accurate results so early. try again on day 17, again that's 17 days after ovulation.

You can use special computer programs to find the days when you are not fertile taking into account possible variations in your menstrual cycle. I've used one of such programs - "Advanced Woman Calendar" for 3 month. You can read about it at http://www.softorbits.com/awc Also you can try another one - "Gegamon Menstrual Calendar".

I found out I was pregnant in October. Three days later I started bleeding lightly and after a week of that, I miscarried. That was a Saturday. I went in that morning and the doctor drew blood and did an HCG test. I have done one twice a week since then. My tests showed the following levels of HCG (in order): 442, 339, 397, 282, 302. I have been bleeding steadily for 12 of the past 16 days plus the week before when I was spotting. Is this normal for a miscarriage? My doctor has scheduled an ultrasound for later in the week but I am freaking out because I don't know if this just means that some of the "products of conception" are still floating around or if there is something greater going on. My doctor says he doesn't know and wants to wait to see what the ultra sound says. Can you advise me on possible problems?

My last, first day of period was on Oct 25. Up to now, i had not had the next period. I'm a diabettics patient. Under medication. My hubby n i r trying for baby for 4 yrs. since my period had not started, will there be any chances for a good news? i'm having a heavy white discharge, however, some says that it can due to my suger level. i'm also having lower back bone pain, n constipation. I'm feeling so sleepy but no vomitting. Am so confused now. I dun wish to test now, as all the while it's been a failure to me. So i wanted to wait till next yr. Any advice pls? Tks.
